Providing a Fair and Effective Workplace

To provide a fair and effective workplace, and avoid having an employment claim made against you, you should make sure you understand your employee’s rights at work.

For example, you must:

  • Stick to what you have agreed in the employment contract.
  • Pay any agreed bonus and commission payments.
  • Ensure that any restrictive covenants are reasonable, and not too lengthy, or covering a wider area than is reasonable.
  • Make sure that employees are not dismissed unfairly.
  • Ensure that any redundancies are dealt with fairly and correctly.
  • Make sure that your behaviour does not force an employee to leave work (constructive dismissal).
  • Give the correct amount of notice if you dismiss an employee.
Ensure that your employees are not discriminated against because of age, race, sex, or disability.
